    Adiposity is associated with blunted cardiovascular, neuroendocrine and cognitive responses to acute mental stress

Resilience to stress may differ according to adiposity. Early studies that addressed this are difficult to interpret due to conflicting findings and limited methods. Recent advances in assessment of cardiovascular stress responses and of fat distribution allow accurate assessment of associations between adiposity and stress responsiveness. We measured responses to the Montreal Imaging Stress Task in healthy men (N=43) and women (N=45) with a wide range of BMIs. Heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) measures were used with novel magnetic resonance measures of stroke volume (SV), cardiac output (CO), total peripheral resistance (TPR) and arterial compliance to assess cardiovascular responses. Salivary cortisol and the number and speed of answers to mathematics problems in the task were used to assess neuroendocrine and cognitive responses, respectively. Visceral and subcutaneous fat was measured using T2*-IDEAL. Greater BMI was associated with generalised blunting of cardiovascular (HR:ÎČ=−0.50 bpm.unit−1, P=0.009; SV:ÎČ=−0.33 mL.unit−1, P=0.01; CO:ÎČ=−61 mL.min−1.unit−1, P=0.002; systolic BP:ÎČ=−0.41 mmHg.unit−1, P=0.01; TPR:ÎČ=0.11 WU.unit−1, P=0.02), cognitive (correct answers: r=−0.28, P=0.01; time to answer: r=0.26, P=0.02) and endocrine responses (cortisol: r=−0.25, P=0.04) to stress. These associations were largely determined by visceral adiposity except for those related to cognitive performance, which were determined by both visceral and subcutaneous adiposity. Our findings suggest that adiposity is associated with centrally reduced stress responsiveness.     Prospecting for new group A streptococcal vaccine candidates

    Background & objectives: Most group A streptococcal (GAS) vaccine strategies focused on the surface M protein of the GAS. However, vaccine based on M protein have some drawbacks. In the present study, we used two approaches to identify new proteins and peptides that may have utility as vaccine candidates. Methods: A whole gel elution procedure was used to separate GAS surface antigens into 9 size fractionated pools. Mice were vaccinated with each pool and antibody titre, opsonic ability and protective capacity measured. In an alternative approach BioInformatics was used to identify putative GAS surface proteins. Peptides from within these proteins were then selected on the basis of predicted antigenicity or location. These peptides were conjugated to keyhole lymphocyanin (KLH) and immunogenicity measured in a mouse model. Results: One pool of GAS surface proteins (approximately 29kDa) induced antibodies that were both opsonic and potentially protective. Immunoflourescent microscopy demonstrated that these antibodies bound to the surface of M1 GAS. Amino acid sequencing subsequently identified superoxide dismutase as the major antigen in this pool. A BioInformatic search of the M1 GAS genome and subsequent analysis identified several peptides that fulfilled criteria as potential vaccine candidates. Each peptide when conjugated to KLH was able to induce a strong antibody response. Interpretation & conclusion: Several new antigens were identified that may have potential as vaccine targets. A future GAS vaccine may have multiple peptide epitopes, providing protection against multiple GAS strains

    In this paper we describe a novel approach to displaying complex 3D scenes on architecture that does not have support for 3D graphical display. Our system makes use of distributed graphics, employing a standard workstation as a server. This server communicates with a client via UDP sockets over a LAN link. To minimize network traffic, a compression engine is employed to compress and decompress data on either side of the network transfer phase. By dividing the display into blocks, we effectively reduce the amount of data needing to be transported from client to server and provide an interactive user friendly client. We chose a PDA as a client, but our approach is extensible and easy to implement on any architecture with at least some 2D graphics drawing capabilities

    An Integrative Review of School-Based Interventions for Addressing Childhood Obesity Introduction: According to Statistics Canada (2016), 1 in 7 children in Canada suffer from obesity. The terms “obesity” and “overweight” are described as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that is harmful to one\u27s health. Children suffering from obesity have reported a higher incidence of psychosocial distress in comparison to children of healthy weight. Methods: Due to these alarming rates in the surge of childhood obesity, an intervention needs to be addressed and implemented. There have been multiple studies and systematic reviews on the topic, although little has been done to implement successful strategies. We conducted an integrative review of both quantitative and qualitative studies to better understand what has previously been known on this topic and what the next steps are to combat childhood obesity. Whittemore and Knafl’s strategies were utilized to create our integrative review to ensure rigour by utilizing their framework (Whittemore & Knafl, 2005). Results: Our initial analysis indicates that implementing health promotion strategies such as increased physical activity, healthy eating in the classroom by using a teach the teacher method and actively involving parents in the intervention group will likely result in long term compliance in reduction of BMI. Thus decreasing mental health illnesses correlated with elevated BMI in youth. Conclusions: This review will be used to educate about the prevalence of childhood obesity and the importance of the implementation of health promotion strategies.     Risk factors for dementia development, frailty, and mortality in older adults with epilepsy – A population-based analysis

    Objective: Although the prevalence of comorbid epilepsy and dementia is expected to increase, the impact is not well understood. Our objectives were to examine risk factors associated with incident dementia and the impact of frailty and dementia on mortality in older adults with epilepsy. Methods: The CALIBER scientific platform was used. People with incident epilepsy at or after age 65 were identified using Read codes and matched by age, sex, and general practitioner to a cohort without epilepsy (10:1). Baseline cohort characteristics were compared using conditional logistic regression models. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to examine the impact of frailty and dementia on mortality, and to assess risk factors for dementia development. Results: One thousand forty eight older adults with incident epilepsy were identified. The odds of having dementia at baseline were 7.39 [95% CI 5.21–10.50] times higher in older adults with epilepsy (n = 62, 5.92%) compared to older adults without epilepsy (n = 88, 0.86%). In the final multivariate Cox model (n = 326), age [HR: 1.20, 95% CI 1.09–1.32], Charlson comorbidity index score [HR: 1.26, 95% CI 1.10–1.44], and sleep disturbances [HR: 2.41, 95% CI 1.07–5.43] at baseline epilepsy diagnosis were significantly associated with an increased hazard of dementia development over the follow-up period. In a multivariate Cox model (n = 1047), age [HR: 1.07, 95% CI 1.03–1.11], baseline dementia [HR: 2.66, 95% CI 1.65–4.27] and baseline e-frailty index score [HR: 11.55, 95% CI 2.09–63.84] were significantly associated with a higher hazard of death among those with epilepsy. Female sex [HR: 0.77, 95% CI 0.59–0.99] was associated with a lower hazard of death. Significance: The odds of having dementia were higher in older adults with incident epilepsy. A higher comorbidity burden acts as a risk factor for dementia, while prevalent dementia and increasing frailty were associated with mortality

    We study the universality class of the fixed points of the 2D random bond q-state Potts model by means of numerical transfer matrix methods. In particular, we determine the critical exponents associated with the fixed point on the Nishimori line. Precise measurements show that the universality class of this fixed point is inconsistent with percolation on Potts clusters for q=2, corresponding to the Ising model, and q=3Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures.     Prevalence of Disorders Recorded in Dogs Attending Primary-Care Veterinary Practices in England

    Purebred dog health is thought to be compromised by an increasing occurence of inherited diseases but inadequate prevalence data on common disorders have hampered efforts to prioritise health reforms. Analysis of primary veterinary practice clinical data has been proposed for reliable estimation of disorder prevalence in dogs. Electronic patient record (EPR) data were collected on 148,741 dogs attending 93 clinics across central and south-eastern England. Analysis in detail of a random sample of EPRs relating to 3,884 dogs from 89 clinics identified the most frequently recorded disorders as otitis externa (prevalence 10.2%, 95% CI: 9.1-11.3), periodontal disease (9.3%, 95% CI: 8.3-10.3) and anal sac impaction (7.1%, 95% CI: 6.1-8.1). Using syndromic classification, the most prevalent body location affected was the head-and-neck (32.8%, 95% CI: 30.7-34.9), the most prevalent organ system affected was the integument (36.3%, 95% CI: 33.9-38.6) and the most prevalent pathophysiologic process diagnosed was inflammation (32.1%, 95% CI: 29.8-34.3). Among the twenty most-frequently recorded disorders, purebred dogs had a significantly higher prevalence compared with crossbreds for three: otitis externa (P = 0.001), obesity (P = 0.006) and skin mass lesion (P = 0.033), and popular breeds differed significantly from each other in their prevalence for five: periodontal disease (P = 0.002), overgrown nails (P = 0.004), degenerative joint disease (P = 0.005), obesity (P = 0.001) and lipoma (P = 0.003). These results fill a crucial data gap in disorder prevalence information and assist with disorder prioritisation. The results suggest that, for maximal impact, breeding reforms should target commonly-diagnosed complex disorders that are amenable to genetic improvement and should place special focus on at-risk breeds. Future studies evaluating disorder severity and duration will augment the usefulness of the disorder prevalence information reported herein

    The stellar and sub-stellar IMF of simple and composite populations

    The current knowledge on the stellar IMF is documented. It appears to become top-heavy when the star-formation rate density surpasses about 0.1Msun/(yr pc^3) on a pc scale and it may become increasingly bottom-heavy with increasing metallicity and in increasingly massive early-type galaxies. It declines quite steeply below about 0.07Msun with brown dwarfs (BDs) and very low mass stars having their own IMF. The most massive star of mass mmax formed in an embedded cluster with stellar mass Mecl correlates strongly with Mecl being a result of gravitation-driven but resource-limited growth and fragmentation induced starvation. There is no convincing evidence whatsoever that massive stars do form in isolation. Various methods of discretising a stellar population are introduced: optimal sampling leads to a mass distribution that perfectly represents the exact form of the desired IMF and the mmax-to-Mecl relation, while random sampling results in statistical variations of the shape of the IMF. The observed mmax-to-Mecl correlation and the small spread of IMF power-law indices together suggest that optimally sampling the IMF may be the more realistic description of star formation than random sampling from a universal IMF with a constant upper mass limit. Composite populations on galaxy scales, which are formed from many pc scale star formation events, need to be described by the integrated galactic IMF. This IGIMF varies systematically from top-light to top-heavy in dependence of galaxy type and star formation rate, with dramatic implications for theories of galaxy formation and evolution.Comment: 167 pages, 37 figures, 3 tables, published in Stellar Systems and Galactic Structure, Vol.5, Springer.
